Turn a three night cruise into a two day dive trip!, How to Turn a Three-Night Cruise Into Two Days of Scuba Diving // 8 Options For Getting in the Water on a Cruise

A fast three-night cruise to the Bahamas actually yields two days of scuba diving if you time your transfers well while you are in New Providence. Planning your cruise means a bit of research into your ship’s arrival times at the cruise ship pier in Nassau. The reward is some truly beautiful diving!

Dive Options Update!

NASSAU – YOU HAVE THREE OPTIONS

Turn a three night cruise into a two day dive trip!, How to Turn a Three-Night Cruise Into Two Days of Scuba Diving // 8 Options For Getting in the Water on a Cruise

1. Stuart Cove’s New Providence

7:45 a.m. pickup for a.m. dives

This is impossible; attempting to make it for the morning dive at Stuart Cove’s if you are sailing with Royal Caribbean. However, for anyone cruising Carnival or some of the other cruise lines, you could possibly make this. This option also gives you the entire afternoon in Nassau, and there are some great off-the-beaten-path things to do!

9:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m. two dives actual dive times

Two tank dives $134

The meet-up spot is usually at the fountain outside of the gates of Festival Place. Be aware that with your large dive bag, you may be asked to step across the street and go through customs. This is because it’s unusual for anyone getting off the ship to carry luggage.

You will receive a sticker to place on your bag, and you will go through this procedure again on the return. While customs agents may be stern and serious during the procedure, afterward, they will be all smiles. Usually, they just want to hear where you went and what fish you saw!

11:45 a.m. pickup for pm dives –

This is quite possible for anyone cruising with Royal, as their ships are docked by mid morning. This is the option for us, usually, and it’s a lot of fun! You can read more about it here at The Trip to Stuart Cove’s.

1:00 p.m. -4:30 p.m. actual dive times

Two tank dives $134

Return to ship right about dusk (6:00 p.m.)

The main drawback of participating in the afternoon dives is that you arrive back at the ship just in time for sunset and dinner. Here’s one of our accounts of SCUBA Diving with Stuart Cove’s.

2. Bahama Divers New Providence

8:30 a.m. meet at dive shop for am dives.

This was impossible for us, arriving on Royal Caribbean at 9:00 a.m. We would need to be off the ship by 8:00 and then catch a taxi for the ten-minute ride to the Bahama Divers dive shop.

Here’s the main thing; diving with Bahama Divers, since it’s so close to the cruise port, you can enjoy your entire afternoon and evening in New Providence. That’s due to their dive shop being located about ten minutes from the cruise ship port.

You don’t have the hour-long drive to Stuart Cove’s on the other side of the island, which saves you even more than the two hours of transit. As soon as Royal Caribbean starts arriving in Nassau just a half hour or hour earlier, this will be our next choice. This frees up the afternoon to walk around and explore.

8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. am dives

Blue Hole & Barracuda $139

Wall and Reef $139

Wreck and Reef $119

1:30 p.m. meet at dive shop for pm dives

1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. afternoon dives

One tank pm dive $89

Back to ship about 5:00 p.m.

From an Email from Bahama Divers: The only other option will be the afternoon, a single shallow 20 foot reef dive trip.

The trip is a combination trip with certified divers, beginner divers and snorkelers.

3. RCCL Shore Excursion in New Providence

RCCL has: Certified Scuba Dive 5 hours $173.99 (10%off)

Check your cruise line for their offerings. You never know… Sometimes you will find a sale that is less than booking outside the cruise line.

11:45 a.m. – This is through Stuart Cove’s so you might as well book direct and save yourself $40. Stuart Cove’s stateside booking agents are fantastic, fast, accurate, and reliable.

4. RCCL “Discover Scuba”

Or, for $188.99 you could crash the “Discover Scuba” excursion so that someone will carry your tanks. Ha! There’s a thought!

5. How to Sneak in a Few Dives
ON THE BOAT!!!

I know, some of you are trying to figure out how to sneak in a few more dives while the ship is underway. It can be done. Here’s how:

They offer a PADI Scuba Course for $403.99. For that, you get three dives.

It involves confined dives in the onboard pool, and two open water dives.

Yes, you read correctly – you get to do some diving ON THE SHIP! Ha ha ha!

The PADI Scuba Diver Course is a subset of the PADI Open Water Dive course. Study at home using the Open Water Diver Manual online. Once onboard you dive. At the end, you are equipped to dive under direct supervision of a PADI Professional to a maximum depth of 12 meters/40 feet. NSD0 is the code.

So, even if you already are certified, you could use this as a fantastic refresher. Or, if you need some dive gear photos, assembly shots, underwater shots with little background distraction – here’s your sneaky way to get in the water with a regulator in your mouth.

6. Book Through an Outside Excursion Company

In the past, I’ve used Shore Excursions Group. If you’re a regular cruiser, you already know all the pros and cons.

Booking through the cruise line for an excursion can be more expensive. However, you enjoy a bit more guarantee of not missing the excursion, and not missing the boat since you booked through your cruise line.

Many people mistakenly think that when you book excursions outside the cruise line, that you forego all those guarantees. You don’t. These outside groups also guarantee you to return to your ship on time, they have the same traveler support, even the same refund guarantees.

The benefits of booking with an outside excursion group over the cruise ship is one – better prices. The drawbacks are none. In fact, many of them send you a discount email after your cruise to apply toward excursions for a future cruise.

Outside excursion groups vice booking completely independently – then you are on your own. You must pay more attention to the pickup and dropoff times, and make sure you know local time. Often, you will book independently and find yourself side-by-side with someone who booked the exact same experience – only at a higher rate. They aren’t too pleased, and you are secretly pleased for your research.

7. LITTLE STIRRUP CAY / CRUISE LINE PRIVATE ISLAND – ONE OPTION

CoCo Cay through RCCL

This is the only game in town. If you are cruising with Royal Caribbean, this is it. If you are cruising with one of the other carriers, just check their day before or after Nassau. They probably offer scuba diving on their private island.

Remember, usually your onboard credit can be used toward these excursions since they are booked directly through the cruise line.

For full information, read “Scuba diving at Coco Cay” that has all the details from being towed out to the dive site to where to leave your gear.

Certified Dive Without Equipment $53.99 ZH18 is the code.

Shallow water dive – maximum 40 feet

Certified Dive WITH Equipment $60.99

Same dive. Worth $7 to not lug equipment ashore?

8. Snorkeling for Free

Also, on the cruise ship private islands, bring along one of those snorkeling vests that they require. That way, you can treat yourself to some free excursion time. If you have your mask, fins, snorkel, and a vest… you just saved yourself $20 or whatever they are charging now for gear rental.
